HD AUDIO 3D

The 7th order ambisonic microphone for 3D recording with unparalleled precision.

Crafted for 3D audio professionals, from filmmakers to scientific researchers.

This unique design is the result of 4 years of innovation by  HDAudio-3D, a collaborative research project involving Feichter Audio, Noise Makers and UBO.

The M480 : 480 MEMS capsule for 7th order ambisonic recording

The M480 is a high density microphone array : 480 MEMS sensors positioned over an 8 cm radius polyhedron. This complex arrangement yields a total of 120 audio signals, enabling highly precise representation
of the sound field.

Microphone signals can be encoded in ambisonics up to
a 7th-order representation for detailed directional analysis and editing of the sound field. The size of the device allows
the estimation of higher-order ambisonic components
 above 200 Hz.

At high-frequency, in order to lessen the aliasing-induced spectral coloration, the estimated components are
processed beyond the spatial aliasing frequency using
diffuse field equalization (DFE). Further information can be found in this study, which investigated the perception of aliasing artefacts using DFE.

For each frequency band depicted in the graph below, ambisonic components are encoded with
a mean squared error < 5% and the corresponding beam directivities are displayed.

The microphone bundle contains
a powerful set of plugins to edit
 and render the M480 signals.

  • A/B conversion (ambiX order 1 to 7)
  • Microphone rotation
  • Optimised ambisonic beamforming
  • Spatial focus / attenuation
  • 360-degree energy visualization
  • Ambisonic renderers for headphones (binaural) and multichannel loudspeaker setups
  • Decoding matrices including 15 immersive configurations (from stereo to 9.1.6)

Post-production tools to process ambisonic recordings

The system supports all multichannel and surround formats, including Dolby Atmos, binaural,
and 3D audio for virtual reality. Its ultra-low noise performance ensures exceptional soundscape rendering, even in the most silent environments. Designed to be both compact and lightweight, it remains highly practical for on-site and studio use, while the high-performance windshield provides effective protection without compromising acoustic transparency.
